My hope is to inspire you to be fearless in the kitchen, to try new things, to take the time to make things the homemade way and most importantly, to have fun doing it!

july {in an instagram}

Looking back through my iPhone photos for the month of July, I think it could be summed up in a few words: family, FUN, and food!  (With a hint of fashion.)

1. Andrew and Caroline had a dual well-check at the pediatrician.  For the first time in history, Andrew did not flip out while the doctor looked in his ears.  It was a revelation.
2. Though he used to come sporadically, Andrew is now my permanent Saturday morning grocery buddy.  I couldn’t be happier about it.  He is great company and throws groceries into the cart like a shot putter.
3. I cannot get enough summer berries these days.  I am determined to eat them as often as possible before they go out of season again.  Berries + greek yogurt = the perfect summer meal for me.
4. We have done our best to beat the heat and spend a few mornings and evenings at our neighborhood pool.  The kids love it almost as much as I do ;)
5. I like taking pics of pretty skies.  I do it a lot.
6. Ben and I took a quick little weekend trip to Chicago and packed it full of fun stuff (lots more on that later).  We were lucky enough to meet up for breakfast with my sweet friend Elly and had a wonderful time.  SO fun!
7. I bought a package of pipe cleaners on a whim.  They have resulted in hours of entertainment for Andrew.
8. The first copies of the 2013 Cupcake Calendar arrived in the mail.  I love how it turned out!
9. Since the heat has backed off at least slightly, we’ve been able to take a few evening walks to the park.  This sweet girl loves it all, and laughs hysterically going down the slide!
10. I did a tie-dye project with Andrew last week.  We had SO much fun and our shirts turned out awesome.  I totally regret not making one for myself.  What was I thinking?!
11. Our vegetable garden is finally starting to produce more than the odd cherry tomato.  The okra in particular is exploding.  Corn cakes will happen now and I am giddy over the thought of gumbo when the weather cools down a bit.
12. IT RAINED!  I was incredibly excited.  Caroline was perplexed.
13. I started work on the 2014 cupcake calendar.  I completed three months so far and love the way they turned out.  It feels good to make progress!
14. J.Crew taunts me with their mailings.  Kryptonite, I tell you.
15. Andrew started preschool this week!  He is positively loving it and thinks his backpack is the coolest thing ever.  We are so proud of him.
16. Those earrings I mentioned showed up and I love them!

Awww, you know I love every single one of these photos but I especially love the one of you and Elly. So sweet to see you two together!

So jealous that you got to meet Elly! Our kiddos are the same age and we’ve been following each other’s blogs for a few years now. Would love to meet her – maybe I’ll have to hop on the Megabus from MSP to Chicago someday :)

Lovely. It’s funny how shocking rain has been this summer. Since when is the Midwest a desert? Also, your J. Crew is my Anthropologie. It’s torture to look through their catalog…or their store…or their website.

That calendar is excellent. I’ve been thinking of tie-dying but cannot bring myself to do it yet. It looks like so much fun but with so much room for disaster. (I’m a walking craftastrophy.)

Andrew’s “Saturday morning hair” is my favorite of all the pics! Thanks for sharing. :)

  • Lyly394

Ok. First of all… Andrews hair!!! in that second photo… so cute! also, isn’t Okra so fun to grow?

I love your instagram updates on the blog, and from the looks of it – July was pretty awesome. I’m jealous that you got to meet Elly, did the kiddos meet, too? Caroline is growing gorgeous by the minute, and looking like a little mini-Annie everyday! Sooo cute!

  • annieseats

This time it was a parents-only trip to Chi-town but we will definitely be bringing the kids again soon and they will get to play together. Can’t wait! Thanks for the compliments about Caroline too :)

  • Tara

Thanks for sharing some of your daily life. I’d love for you to sometime discuss what your schedule is like– your work hours, how you work in meal planning/shopping/cooking/cleaning the kitchen (!) in with raising a family. What trade-offs to do you have to make to keep meals homemade? Are you on a strict schedule so everything gets done, or are you lax sometimes and grab a pizza on the way home? I’m very curious about these things, would love to hear how you make this all work!

I love instagram photo posts! Your children are beautiful!!

  • annieseats

Tara, I’ve actually had requests like this many times but I just don’t know how to write a post about it. My schedule is different every week depending on what rotation I’m on, whether I’m on call, etc. I do have a post about my menu planning strategy that you can find via the search bar. I just do whatever I need to do to get stuff done and spend every free moment possible with my family (and see friends too).

  • Cluttercafe

Love all your pics! Your babies are beautiful. May I ask how you put together your photo collage. It’s fantastic! Love your blog, can’t wait for my cupcake calendar.

  • Amanda Tucker

what program did you use to combine all these photos?

  • annieseats

    Lightroom.

  • annieseats

I used Lightroom. So glad you enjoy it!

You are so organized; I can’t even begin to think about 2014 right now!

  • http://www.mrsregueiro.com/ Krystal R.

I predict Zach and Andrew will be best buds when they do meet!!

  • annieseats

Ha! It’s not really up to me. The publishing company gives me deadlines and I have to meet them. That’s all :)

  • Patti

Hi Annie, I follow your blog every day, and I always love your info and insight. re: Tie Dye. My kid is almost 21, so probably not too much tie dying days left in me, but how did you get your colors so bright? Mine have always been so muted and washed out. Perhaps I’ll need to know one day for the grandkids! :-) Thanks!

  • annieseats

I actually used a tie-dye kit that I’ll be mentioning in my next “Things I’m Loving” post, so keep an eye out for that. I was very surprised at how bright they turned out!

  • Jessica LeBlanc

Your children are adorable! It looks like y’all had a fun July.

Favorite: Caroline and the rain! Those cheeks just make me melt :)

  • Thefeastforall

The photos are so beautiful and your babies are so adorable!. May I ask you a small question – even though this might look a funny one.

You cook/bake a lot of things. I also love to bake. But my problem is when I bake, I dont know what to do with that whole thing. I bake loafs which me and my husband finish in about 4 or 5 days. But when I think about making cakes, pies I dont know what to do…

Do you give away to your friends? Or you bake in small quantities? Because some times it is quite difficult to half the recipe.

  • annieseats

I don’t find it difficult to halve, so I do that when needed. I also give things away to friends, etc. I don’t know – it’s just not a problem for me. I’m very mindful of what we make and what we eat.

  • Lydia

I love these instagrams! They are awesome. I must admit, I am totally excited about your cupcake calendar!! I definitely want to get one for 2013. :)
