DIY Yogurt Mix-Ins: Blueberry, Raspberry, and Peach Cooking View

When I first embarked on my homemade yogurt adventure, I knew that the only way for this to become a feasible and sustainable routine would be if I could also create some homemade versions of the various fruit mix-ins I love so much.  I’m just not one of those people who enjoys plain yogurt, straight up.  I need more sweetness.  Many people are perfectly content with just stirring in a bit of jam and calling it a day, but not I.  I do like jam, but on toast or a scone.  With yogurt I want something more fresh tasting, not quite as cooked down as preserves and definitely chunkier.  I set out to create a variety of flavors and was met with mostly success.  (There was supposed to be a fourth flavor here but after three attempts, it either needs a lot more tweaking or simply to be trashed.)

Thankfully these three flavors are more than enough to keep me content for now, and they are all variations on the same recipe.  You can use fresh or frozen fruit depending on what is available to you.  I used frozen since none of these are quite in season yet but I’m looking forward to making fresh versions this summer.  And don’t worry, I have plenty more ideas for mix-ins in progress so if you don’t see your favorite listed here, it’s probably on the way.  Feel free to suggest others as well.  As a small side note, the combination of yogurt with the raspberry mix-in and this granola - to die for.

Blueberry, Raspberry, and Peach Sauces
Yield: about 2 cups

Ingredients

2 cups blueberries, raspberries, or chopped peaches (fresh or frozen)
¼ cup sugar
1 ½ tsp. cornstarch
1 tbsp. cold water
2 tsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice

Cooking View

Directions

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the fruit and sugar.  Heat until the fruit begins to release its juices. Mix the cornstarch with the cold water and lemon juice until lump free, then stir the slurry into the saucepan.  Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 1 minute until thickened. Remove from the heat.  Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

    These look great! I’m not 100% sold on making my own yogurt since I love the Fage brand so much, but it would definitely be more economical if I switched to buying their giant tub of plain Greek Yogurt and making my own topping, instead of the small individual ones with the fruit.

    I’m curious to know what the 4th was going to be! I’m obsessed with Chobani pineapple, so definitely would love to see that here :) I was wondering if making a curd would work well as a mix in? I’m so glad to see you’ve considered fruit flavors since so many recipes gloss over any flavorings.

    Yay! Our family loves yogurt, and eats a ton of it, but unfortunately it’s always the flavored kind from the store with more sugar in it than I’d like. I’ve been wanting to make the switch over to adding my own fruit into plain yogurt, but just hadn’t made the leap yet…here’s the push I so needed! Thank you, Annie!     This is perfect! I have yet to try the homemade yogurt but as my daughter just turned two it’s time to switch to Organic low fat yogurt and I’m having troubles finding flavored yogurt that doesn’t cost a million dollars. These mix-ins will be perfect to buy for a large tub of yogurt.

    I agree with Maggie’s comment…I’m a Fage fan and would love to switch to adding my own mix ins instead of buying the individual containers.

    I am also going to try this recipe with strawberries which is my favorite flavor. And I think my 2 yr old will love mixing these into her yogurt!

    yay Annie… they look amazing, I have a huge blackberry patch just behind my fence in the back, I’m thinking that I will give that a try as well as apple and maybe pineapple/coconut ( just for my own little tropical escapes..I wonder how well rum would mix in with it)

    ok just had to toss this in as my son came in and saw the post then wanted the topping for yogurt made..we had apples on hand so a yummy apple cin caramel topping was made following the recipe here as a guideline…i forgot that the yogurt (strained for greek style) hadnt been sweetened (i use it for cooking too in place of sour cream so non sweetened) but that was solved with a little sprinkle of sugar, a small handful of homemade granola with raisin and dried cranberries and sunflower seeds, topped with the apple cin caramel and the kids are now munching on what my daughter referred to as a yummy semi healthy treat (she said because i added sugar it wasnt as healthy.

    All in all, they loved it even though the son that saw and “demanded” the topping to be made instead of me finishing an assignment for my IT class, doesnt “like” yogurt, but he isnt letting the bowl out of his hand so thats a great sign.

    My kids always loved the lemon yoplait (before I stopped buying yogurt) so I make a lemon curd from cooking light and it mixes in beautifully to my homemade yogurt. I have also used low sugar strawberry freezer jam, but I think these chunkier mix ins look eat better. thanks!

    Like yours, my family tries to make everything we eat from scratch. I have yet to venture into the world of yogurt making, but I do make sure to buy plain yogurt that has nothing added to it. I was able to pick fresh blueberries, peaches, ect., this past year and have them stocked in our freezer. In the past I’ve plucked a few of these beauties out of the freezer and sprinkled them over the yogurt and let it sit over night. Let me tell you, your above recipe, blows that out of the water! I’ve tried blueberry & peaches so far, and I can’t wait to try strawberry next! You just saved us from yogurt boredom! I bow to the yogurt queen!

    While my Greek yogurt incubates I went ahead and made the blueberry topping. Oh my goodness! That stuff is so delicious. While it’s cooling on the counter I keep finding myself grabbing a clean spoon each time I walk by it and having a “sample.” No more store bought blueberry pie filling for me! So much better than the store bought stuff. I now plan on putting some of it on my homemade buttermilk pancakes in the morning. Hubby will like that, too.

    I have a similar recipe I use to make blueberry sauce for pancakes and yogurt. The only difference is after being removed from the heat, I add cinnamon and almond extract. I imagine this would be good with the peach too.

    Came out wonderfully! I added some cinnamon to the peaches. My kids loved it.
