Blood Orange Margaritas Cooking View

What sort of Monday are you having?  Hopefully it’s the good kind – productive and pleasant.  You might want a margarita to celebrate being one fifth of the way through the work week.  On the other hand, if you’ve got a case of the Mondays, well – these will help with that too.

Citrus season is in full swing, and hopefully the lovely bright colors and fresh scents will help keep the winter blues away until spring is really here.  Blood oranges are one citrus fruit that has a short window of availability.  I end up pining after them all year long and then during those few short weeks when they are available, I do my best to make use of them.  Well, it turns out this year I went a little overboard.  I hoarded them at the grocery store and got a good number in my produce bin, and the next thing I knew our counter was overflowing with them.  What else to do but make margaritas?  I have yet to meet a margarita I didn’t like, but these are high up on my list of favorites.  The flavor is quite similar to a traditional margarita, but slightly sweeter thanks to the blood orange juice and of course, you just can’t beat that gorgeous red-orange hue.

Blood Orange Margaritas

1 cup (8 oz.) freshly squeezed blood orange juice (about 7-8 oranges)
½ cup (4 oz.) freshly squeezed lime juice
¾ cup (6 oz.) tequila

¼ cup (2 oz.) simple syrup
Blood orange slices, for garnish

I started drooling when I saw Shawnda’s list of margaritas sometime last week too – and this time my mouth start watering all over again! I think I need to start drinking margaritas to celebrate 1/5 of the work week accomplished! Love the suggestion! ;)

I’m having the kind of Monday that makes me want to drink margaritas at 10:30 AM. Is that bad? Oh well. These look amazing!

  • Noelle

They look amazing! Love that color! The orange garnish is just beautiful, I always wanted to try blood oranges, and I saw them in the market the other day!

    I’m now having a “want a margarita” Monday… but luckily it’s not a “need a margarita” Monday :)

I’m loving citrus margaritas (other than lime, of course) this year more than ever. I haven’t done blood orange yet, but now I really want to. After all, I am 1/5 of the way through the work week!

Gorgeous photos of these, by the way.

    WANT THIS ON FRIDAY!

These are so beautiful and make me long for spring even more (if that is possible). Sigh.

  • Claire

It’s a healthy margarita with that extra Vitamin C from the blood oranges. :) Your pictures continue to get more awesome!

It’s amazing how quickly things get pinned. I re-pinned this about an hour ago and came here to see what your new post was today and saw it was yours. Looks delicious. I can’t wait to try it.

  • Emily

Even though I had a very productive Monday, these look amazing. Probably because I am pregnant and due tomorrow, so it’s been a while :) The good news is, I should be able to enjoy one soon, while the blood oranges are still in season! Thanks!

I’ve had TWO blood orange margarita days in a row. I hoard blood oranges too. They make something ordinary seem so special! I am a huge margarita fan and I love that these have simple syrup. I feel like margaritas need them. I’m a little too lightweight for a stiffer version.

  • Maggie

Yup. That’s Sunday’s cocktail sorted, right there. I love Blood oranges too – here in England, we’ve been getting fabulous Italian ones, grown on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. They are rich and intense and I love to make a jelly (jello) out of them with some Campari. A most refreshing end to a meal.

Annie – made this over the weekend and they were hands down the best margaritas we’ve ever made. THANK YOU!!

  • Cillymom

I’m not really a tequila drinker, do you recommend a gold or silver with this recipe?

  • annieseats

I’m not picky enough to know the difference :)
