DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice Cooking View

With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching and fall baking season well underway, you may come across some recipes that call for pumpkin pie spice.  Rather than shelling out money for a special spice blend at the store, you can easily make your own by combining other staple spices that you probably already have on hand.  This really couldn’t get much easier, and of course the beauty of it is that you can adjust the spice blend to suit your own preferences.  Do you have 5 minutes?  Then you have time to make pumpkin pie spice.  Cute little containers of homemade spice blends could make nice gifts for the bakers in your life.

Oh, and then after you whip this up, you’ll probably want to test it out in a batch of pumpkin cream cheese muffins.  Just sayin’.

Love this idea for a gift–so inexpensive and easy!! And how cute would it be in a jar with fabric and ribbon attached to the top?

I do this with chili powder and taco seasoning and a few other spice type things. I will probably do pumpkin pie spice as soon as I run out of the little container in the cupboard.

I love pumpkin pie spice! It is my go to autumn spice for sure!

The last line of your narrative before the recipe reminds me of the Laura Numeroff books — If you Give a Pig a Pancake, If you give a Mouse a Cookie, etc. I can see it now “…if you make some DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice, you’ll probably have to make some Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins to test it out…” :)

my new year’s resolution for 2012 (and i NEVER keep new year’s resolutions, it’s my fatal flaw) is to become a DIY-er, to the extent that i asked for a sewing machine (and some other tools) for christmas and i’m making our christmas cards and gifts myself this year, as a kind of kick-start. and thanks to you, i can make our favorite holiday meals and treats without store-bought packets and mixes, too :) thanks, annie, keep ‘em comin’ i need all the help i can get ;)

I never thought to make pumpkin pie spice! Thanks! My whole family loves those pumpkin cream cheese muffins! They’ve become a fall food staple!

  • Annie

I think that is a great goal! I feel like this has been the year of DIY for me, and I may do a round up of all the DIY-type recipes at the end of this year so that can help inspire you :)

  • Annie

Haha, love it! My favorite is If You Give a Cat a Cupcake because we have cats, and well, you know how I feel about cupcakes :)

I always make my own pumpkin pie spice as I can’t buy it anywhere here in Germany. And because I don’t like cloves at all I can just leave them out. I am going to try your recipe as I just used up my last bit for some pumpkin spice cupcakes this weekend.

I did this this year for all my pumpkin baking and it’s seriously come in handy many many times. Highly recommend & glad you’re sharing this! I did mine with 1/4 cup of cinnamon and then all the other spices and it’s last me through almost 6 pumpkin goodies! :)

I love making my own homemade spice blends. I have made pumpkin pie spice and taco seasoning before. And recently shared a homemade poultry seasoning blend, which is also very popular this time of year!

Thanks for the recipe! I am always looking for ways to save money on ingredients I only use seasonally.

Pumpkin cream cheese muffins! Is that what’s showing in the corner of the picture here? DELICIOUS. Those would get me out of bed in the morning, no matter how early!

Great idea! There are lots of spice mixes like this that would save money to make yourself.

Another great gift idea! My father just said to me that our generation seems to be going back to making things from scratch and I have to say, I think you are leading that revolution! Love all your great ideas…I have the DIY vanilla in my cupboard getting ready for gift giving. So glad you enjoyed Vermont. I hope you’ll come back and visit again soon!

This is great because now I won’t be stuck with a huge bottle. I can make a little or a lot. Thanks!

Oooh! I saw this on Tara’s blog and made it, too! (Will be on the blog later this week.) It’s perfect as I never bought it from the store and would get tired of using all of my measuring spoons in the different spices. I think it could also be a cool favor gift at Thanksgiving, served in little jars. By the way, I love your measuring spoons! Is it weird that I think they are so cute? ;)

I have a pile of recipes in my to make pile that need pumpkin spice, yet every time I am at the grocery store I always forget to buy it! Now I don’t have to! I love the DIYs! And I love love the idea of homemade spices! What a darling gift idea! Thanks for another great one, Annie!

    Hi Annie!

I love the little container you used. Do you remember where you got it? How fun would it be to make a bunch of DIY specialty seasonings as a Christmas gift?! Already getting inspired : )

As always, thanks for the great recipes and ideas!

  • Annie

It’s either Target or Sur La Table, I have some from both places. I like the SLT ones better, I think they seal better, and they aren’t very expensive.

  • Linda

Would this be okay to put in coffee to add some extra flavor?

  • annieseats

You would be better off using my homemade pumpkin spice syrup which is meant for flavoring coffee: http://www.annies-eats.com/2011/10/03/diy-pumpkin-spice-syrup-for-pumpkin-spice-lattes/
