Jalapeño Popper Dip Cooking View

It is already a month into football season and I can’t believe this is the first game-watching type of snack I have shared.  Shame on me.  Of course, I’m referring to NFL football here.  I mean, I went to IU so college football just doesn’t get me that excited.  I think I’ve been subconsciously avoiding the topic because I haven’t been that thrilled with my team’s performance this year.  Sure, they have a winning record so far but I think only one of their games has showed them playing as the Colts I know and love.


I made this dip a few weeks ago to enjoy during a game and it was a major hit with the fam.  My dad must have commented nearly ten times on how much he loved it.  The fact that the bowl was scraped clean was pretty telling too.  This really does have the flavor just like that of jalapeño poppers.  There is nothing even remotely healthy about it, which is why I chose to serve it with a huge plate of veggies to a large crowd.  Of course, I preferred it on the baguette slices – go figure.  I know everyone seems to have a different threshold for spice, but I thought this was just right – definitely hot enough to call spicy, but not so much I was gulping water.  I’m sure this will make more game day appearances before the season is over.  I hope the Colts do too.

Jalapeño Popper Dip
Yield: about 12 servings

Ingredients

2 (8 oz.) packages cream cheese, softened
1 cup mayonnaise
1 (4 oz.) can chopped green chiles, drained
1 (4 oz.) can diced jalapeño peppers, drained
½ cup shredded Mexican style cheese
½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 375˚ F.  In a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, mayonnaise, green chiles, jalapeños, and shredded cheeses.  Mix thoroughly with a spoon or spatula until smooth and evenly combined.  Spread the mixture into a baking dish (approximately 9 x 9-inches).

  • In a second bowl, combine the Panko and Parmesan and stir with a fork until combined.   Sprinkle over the cream cheese mixture in the baking dish.  Spray lightly with cooking spray.  Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the mixture is hot and the topping is golden.  Serve warm with baguette slices, vegetables, etc. as desired.

    I don’t think it would be a huge difference, though I actually do think that the use of canned peppers made it taste more like the poppers we know and love. I’m sure you could use fresh and it would be delicious, though I’m not exactly sure how many I would sub since the heat of fresh vs. canned will also vary.

    I love this dip too! I usually make it with fresh jalapenos (I use about 6) and cheddar cheese in place of the mexican blend. It is SO good and always a huge hit – great with Fritos Scoops as well as bread!

    Living in New Mexico, we like to think we know a bit about chili. Whenever we use chili in anything we always add garlic (supposedly so you won’t get a tummy ache from the chili). I made this wonderful recipe adding the garlic and, talk about a hit! I just used a sprinkle of garlic powder. I also used fresh jalapenos because we like it hot. It was so delicious!     This is such a great idea! I’m a Giants fan and my husband loves the Jets. Every Sunday we get set up on the couch in our respective team shirts and watch 6 straight hours of football…and of course eat lots of game food!     I think it is supposed to refer to the preshredded type, but really I think just about anything would be fine. The dish I baked the dip in is Le Creuset and it was a gift. I’m sure it is available at stores that carry Le Creuset (I like Sur La Table).

    I am going to make this in the next few days and I was thinking of using some of it to stuff inside a chicken breast and then rolling the chicken in the panko/parmesan mixture. Do you think this dip would taste good with chicken?

    I’m always looking for a new treat for Sunday’s for watching football so thank you this sounds YUMMY!!! So I don’t eat or like condiments and mayonnaise falls into that category. I’ve tried to learn to like it, but just can’t seem to acquire a taste for it. What do you think I could substitute for the mayonnaise? This dip just sounds so good I really want to try it.

    It’s a big part of this recipe so I’m not sure I would use a substitution. Probably just look for something else similar. If you didn’t know the mayonnaise was there, you certainly wouldn’t taste it.

    Mmmm…I made this. So much easier than stuffing peppers and breading them and cooking them and it tastes dangerously close to the real deal. I am the appetizer queen in our group (I struggle with the main dish but I can make the heck out of finger foods and dips!) We ate this rather quickly and many have asked for the recipe. I accidentally grabbed 2 cans of jalepenos instead of one jalepeno and one green chilis but it was still remarkable! I offered club crackers and jalepeno butter baguette crisps (I found at a local grocer) the most popular dipper was certainly the crackers. They begged me to make a second batch once it was done. I hope to get invited somewhere this weekend to make it again! :)

    So…. I made this dip for the first time for the SuperBowl in February, and it was a HUGE hit! So, trying to decide what to take to our Fantasy Football Draft this weekend I remembered this dip and how delicious it was I made it again. We LOVED it, but there was so much other food to eat that day that we had about half of it leftover. Trying to think of something different to do with the leftover dip (rather than just eat it as dip), I made Jalapeno Popper “Rangoon” – I used wonton wrappers & put about 1 T of the cold dip in the center of each wonton wrapper folded it into a triangle & sealed the edges with water. Then I fried them in a little bit of oil (until brown on each side)… These were AMAZING!!! I would highly recommend these and will DEFINITELY be making them again!

    Hi Annie, made your recipe for a tailgating cook-off that we had at work and everyone loved it (placed 3rd). I made it in a crock pot and used half light mayo and half light sour cream instead of the 1 cup mayo since regular mayo tends to get greasy in a crock pot. Of course I could not have the crispy topping but I did make a test batch of it at home in the oven and I loved the topping. If people are wondering what to do with the leftover dip, I added some to my scrambed eggs an it was delish!

    I made this dip according to the recipe and it was great! I,m not a mayonnaise eater at all. I couldn’t taste the Mayo in it. I wasn’t able to find chopped jalapenos, so substituted chopped pepperocini and it was excellent. Will make again.

    For those of you that want to make this dip and take it somewhere and it still be hot. I have purchased something called a bean pot. I believe they are made by taste of home. I have several of them. It will keep things hot (like they just came out of the oven) for hours. I have several of them and use them for every holiday.

    I made this the other night for family. I was a little hesitant to try the recipe, because I do not like spicy/hot foods. This was a huge hit! Everyone loved it, including me! This is not an overwhelmingly hot/spicy dish. You get a little bit of hotness in your mouth after you swallow, but nothing too strong. Between 4 adults, we almost ate the entire dish in one sitting! I’ll definitely be making this again, but next time I’ll be planning on taking it to a football party! Very, very delicious!

It was the perfect blend of creaminess, cheesiness, and spiciness! it was cleaned off by the end of the party! Definitely saving this as one of my go-to dips!
