Star Wars Cookies

I’ll be honest – I’m completely out of my element here.  I don’t know the first thing about Star Wars.  I’ve seen all the episodes (I think), and still have little to no understanding what they are about.  My most vivid Star Wars memory is someone at my high school dressing up as Darth Mal on Halloween and scaring the living daylights out of me.  However what I do know is, Ben loves Star Wars.  He has since he was young, long before we were together.  Williams Sonoma recently came out with this set of cookie cutters and I thought they would make a great surprise for Ben.  It’s not easy to surprise the person you live with by giving them cookies that require a few days of work and covering your kitchen in nine different colors of icing.  Eventually I just showed Ben the cookie cutters, which was surprise enough on its own.

Of course I had to have him explain who each of the characters were and whether they were good or bad (no worries, I knew Yoda and Darth Vader).  I do think it’s a little disappointing that the ratio of bad to good guys in this set is three to one.  I think a Chewbacca cookie cutter would have been a nice addition to the set.  I’m guessing there are enough characters that they could come out with a second set.  I hope they do, because this was a fun project!

Due to my total lack of Star Wars knowledge, I had to keep the cookie cutter box next to me the entire time I was decorating to get the designs as close to correct as possible.  One small change I did make was to do all the detailing on Darth Vader in black instead of gray.  I tried both options, and preferred the look of an all-black cookie – more menacing, you know.

The great thing about these cookie cutters is that since they make perfect impressions in the cookie dough, really no decorating is required and it will still be obvious what each cookie is.  In fact, I did make the impressions in my cookies but because of using royal icing and flooding some of the cookies completely, it was not really necessary.   I made sure to share them with a few of my friends who also love Star Wars and they were totally stoked.  Whatever way you choose to decorate them (or not), these are a certain hit with any Star Wars fans you know.

    These are adorable!

My 7 year old son is bonkers about Star Wars and I like you, still can fathom out what it is all actually about!!!! None the less, I won’t be showing these biscuits to him as he will want some and there is not a chance I could produce anything as amazing as yours! As always, such a treat to visit your blog. x

Those are awesome! I’m laughing about you having to keep the box next to you at all times while decorating. I’m not a big Star Wars person either!

That is love right there. My husband and kids would love these. You did a beautiful job.

HAHAHA my whole family would love these, we’re huge star wars geeks! These are awesome.

Oh gosh we saw these in the Williams Sonoma catalog and were just in love – how hysterical! And lady you are some cookie decorating maven – they look amazing!

This made me laugh so much. They are very cute. But don’t worry, you’re not alone in not knowing much about Star Wars. I once went to see a British comedian, Phil Jupitus, who does a two hour show based on the films. Half way through the show, he turned to the packed theatre of 2,000 people and said they he assumed that everyone there had actually seen the films. At the front one lone girl put her hand up to say she hadn’t. It was very funny!

I’ve been a Star Wars fan all my life…what great cookie cutters… I need to get these for sure!! Thanks for sharing!

  • Emily

    Hi Annie:

I absolutely LOVE your blog and get tons of great ideas from you. I bought these cookie cutters a while back as my husband and 5 year old are obsessed with Star Wars. However, have been afraid to even attempt making them as I am not to great at decorating. Any chance I could get a little more detail on the icing colors, how did you achieve the perfect yoda green? Also, did you use your standard sugar cookie recipe that you use to make your cutouts? Thanks so much!! Emily

  • Carla

Thanks for the link to the cookie cutters! My husband and boys are going to love those. So will my BFF. I can’t wait to get my hands on them!

  • Annie

    Emily,
There’s really no exact way to explain how to get the right coloring. You just have to mix in colors until it looks right to you. For Yoda, I used Wilton leaf green and added brown to get the right shade. And yes, I used the same usual sugar cookie recipe – I actually linked to it within this post.

  • Rebecca

Though not a Star Wars super fan, these are still pretty awesome! I always enjoy your posts, very creative! Hope your husband enjoyed immensely :)

  • http://sewmanybooks.blogspot.com Gwenevere

a few days huh? What exactly is your process because when I look at your cookies I think I want them, but I know I’m not willing to do that much work all in a day, but if you are dividing it up, maybe it’s not so bad.

  • Annie

Just check out my royal icing tutorial. It’s linked within the post. The only way you can do royal icing is over a few days due to the drying time it requires.

Wow these are adorable. I am not a Star Wars fan myself, but my boyfriend sure is. You are so creative! :)

  • http://odwink.blogspot.com/ HPD

wow .. flashback … Mom had a Sesame Street cookie cutter set when I was a wee lad, and she’d spend hours getting the icing just right. you know, because Bert’s yellow and Big Bird’s yellow are not the exact same shade. cheers!

So cute! Love the Yoda one.

  • Mrs. Smith

These are awesome! I’m a huge Star Wars fan and so is most of my family. They would love these! By the way, I think the point of Star Wars is really just to tell a story like most movies. George Lucas wanted to tell a really good story. Personally, I think he would have succeeded better if he had left off with the original three movies, but that’s just my own personal opinion.
Thanks for the post. I don’t generally buy lots of cookie cutter shapes but I may think about getting these.

Even though my husband doesn’t love sweets, he would go crazy for these! Good for you for being such an awesome wife and making these for YOUR hubby, haha! They’re hysterical!

    Hi Annie,
Is there a trick to getting black icing? I have these cookie cutters too but haven’t made the cookies yet. I’m thinking we’re doing a SW themed 4th bday party for my son, and these will be favors.

Also, I know these cookies need to dry overnight- but do you leave them completely uncovered? Do they get stale? Just curious. Thank you so much for posting these cookies, I’m really getting inspired :)

  • Maria

How funny – I made these cookies this weekend too! Although my cookies were MUCH simpler than yours, and I stuck with just the StormTrooper (using regular sugar cookie dough) and DarthVader (using chocolate cookie dough), then I just used black royal icing to outline the impressions! Not as pretty, but they still make a great impression with a TON less work in case you don’t want it to take a few days next time :)

  • Jamie

We just got our Star Wars cookie cutters in the mail a couple of weeks ago! Were making them for my son to take to his preschool birthday party. They are the cutest things ever!

  • http://penniesonaplatter.wordpress.com Pennies on a Platter

    ha! Annie, priceless! Great job!

  • Annie

I just use black icing gel color and it works great. It may look a tad gray before it dries, but it always dries black. They don’t get stale being out overnight (at least using this cookie recipe). The icing actually seems to help seal in moisture. Don’t try covering them, that will just mess up the icing.

Super cute. When I first tried decorating with royal icing a couple years ago, I looked around for Star Wars cutters because my nephews (and brother-in-law) are crazy for Star Wars. I was surprised that they weren’t more available then, but I’m glad I can get some now!

  • http://thecollegebakery.blogspot.com Anna

Oh. My. Goodness. When I opened up this page, I became giddy with excitement – what a beautiful way to combine two loves of mine: baking AND geekiness. Thank you so much for sharing this project with us – you did a wonderful job of decorating each of the characters!

  • http://www.growingupgabel.blogspot.com Camille

I just bought these (along with the pancake molds)! I was planning to skip the icing (I lack the patience and skill to deal with all that detail) so I’m glad the impressions turn out on the cookie!

  • Kristi

I saw those when they first came out! I have two young boys and an older Star Wars fanatic (my husband!) so I may need to get the cookie cutters. Your cookies look so cool – just like the box! Great job! Love your blog also :)

  • http://cookingincucamonga.blogspot.com Janet

    I LOVE THESE!!!!
I saw these cookie cutters over the summer and almost bought them (my husband is a big Star Wars fan too), but the husband wanted the pancake molds instead.
    Great job decorating!

    Annie-
I’m quickly learning that the ratio of bad guys to good guys is always 3:1. ;)
I think Williams Sonoma is on to something.

Holy cow Annie, that Boba Fett cookie is amazing! All of them look fantastic and I once again marvel at your Supermom skills.

  • http://www.bakeat350.blogspot.com bridget {bake at 350}

They’re PERFECT!!! I totally agree….they needed a Chewbacca….could have done without that Boba Fett guy, even though my kiddo would probably disagree. :)

  • Mindy

    Annie,
I love the cookies!!! They are amazing…thank for the link I bought them already this morning:-)

First off, I’m a huge fan (not a fanboy though) of Star Wars. I have the original episodes (3) and watch whenever my wife isn’t looking.

Anyways, I saw these at Williams and Sonoma along with the Star Wars Apron and was immediately jealous of all the kids that were going to get one and had already got one. I was also told that they might be coming out with Adult size aprons. OMG! I can’t wait for that!

Also, those cookies are awesome! Also I love your recipies!

  • http://www.ellecupcake.blogspot.com elle

OH WOW!!! These are amazing!!! haha I love them :) you did such a great job. <3

  • Elizabeth

Wow I love these! My husband and I love star wars and these would be the perfect surprise this year for him to take to work for the annual halloween contest (each group decorates their area and the higher ups do the judging) since the last two years they just put candy out.

  • Mercedes

Wow – I think these cookies just may be the greatest thing I have ever seen on your blog! I love Star Wars… I think a trip to Williams Sonoma is in order!

  • http://sewmanybooks.blogspot.com Gwenevere

I’ve just spent the past 2 hours pouring over all of your icing tips and sugar cookie dough posts. This is all so amazing to me, why I don’t know, i’m easily amazed I guess. Anyway, something I couldn’t find…your thoughts on cookie cutters. I read that you have many many, but of all that you have is there a specific type of cookie cutter you would purchase over another (pretending of course that you could get the exact same shape out of two different brands).

  • Annie

No, I buy cookie cutters based on shape, not by brand.

  • Jen O

    Hi Annie,

Your cookies are amazing. I am currently attempting the same ones by my impressions from the cookies aren’t as deep as yours. Is it how thick I rolled out the dough? Also when I flooded the cookies, I no longer have any impressions. I’ll really need to rely on the box. Please send any advice. Thank you.

  • Annie

I’m not sure about the impressions. I wasn’t really worried about them at all since, as you said, the impressions aren’t even visible when the cookies are flooded. I just did the designs with the box as a guide.

  • Jen O

Thank you for your advice. I did use the box and your photos. All the kids liked them. Thank you again.

  • kim

wow. awesome decorating. Did you use the recipe for the frosting that came with the cookie cutters?

  • Annie

I used the icing linked and referenced within this post.

I love this your so awesome!

Does anyone know where I can buy these cookie cutters? I need them quick and don’t have time to order them on line.

    Williams Sonoma.
