Finally, the post so many have been waiting for!  I first made these truffles over a year ago for the truffle tray at my holiday party.  I think most flavors of truffles are bound to be a hit, but these were the clear favorite.  Now I’m not completely in love with real cookie dough as so many people seem to be.  Sure, it tastes good, but I much prefer the finished product any day.  I’m sure part of that has to do with the presence of raw eggs in cookie dough.  These are the perfect solution for me because they taste exactly like raw cookie dough, but contain no raw eggs so they are completely safe to eat.  The recipe makes a lot of truffles, but it’s okay because I have found that friends are more than happy to take a bag or box of them home.  I think these would be a wonderful treat for any time of the year, but they are also very suitable as a sweet treat for your Valentine :)


8 tbsp. unsalted butter, at room temperature
¾ cup light brown sugar, packed
2¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
½ cup mini semisweet chocolate chips
1½ lb. semisweet (or bittersweet) chocolate, coarsely chopped
Mini chocolate chips (for garnish)


  • 01

    Combine the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and cream on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.  Beat in the flour, sweetened condensed milk and vanilla until incorporated and smooth.  Stir in the chocolate chips.  Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until the mixture has firmed up enough to form balls.

    Shape the chilled cookie dough mixture into 1-1½ inch balls.  Place on a baking sheet lined with wax paper.  Cover loosely, transfer the pan to the freezer and chill for 1-2 hours.

    When ready to dip the truffles, melt the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water.  Dip each chilled truffle, one at a time, coating in chocolate and shaking gently to remove the excess.  (If at any point during dipping, the cookie dough balls become too soft, return to the freezer to chill for 30 minutes.)  Transfer to a wax-paper lined surface.  If using mini chocolate chips for garnish, sprinkle on top quickly after dipping each truffle before the chocolate sets.  Once all the truffles have been dipped, store them in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

  • I make cookie dough brownies — you “frost” them with an eggless cookie dough and then top with chocolate — and everyone always loves them because of the cookie dough. Isn’t that funny that people go nuts over such a simple thing — I’m like you, I like the cookies better!

    Okay, that makes more sense. It really varies depending on the temp of your house, fridge, size bowl you use, etc. but I would estimate 1-2 hours.

    Hi Carissa,
    You can use chocolate chips, but it won’t work quite as well as regular chocolate. Chocolate chips have a lower cocoa butter content than regular chocolate to help them keep their shape in baking. This affects their ability to melt and be used for something like dipping truffles. So yes, you can, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Everytime I use chocolate chips for such a purpose, I wish I hadn’t.

    This means creaming the butter and sugar – as in, a verb. Combining them together on a high speed for a few minutes “creams” them.

    I currently in the process of making these! Except that I have run out of time and will have to do the dipping in chocolate stage tomorrow…will it be catastrophic to leave the dough balls in the freezer overnight? And when done, how long can these truffles be kept outside at room temperature before they start melting or such?

    That is totally fine. In fact, that’s what I did. Just cover them with foil or plastic wrap. Once they are done, I tried to keep them in the refrigerator to stay chilled, but left them out for hours during the party which was fine too. They won’t melt either way – it is still chocolate, after all. Your house would have to be very hot for that to happen.

    I made these and they were FABULOUS!!! I was wondering if you had any suggestions on what to use instead of the sweetened condensed milk. I thought the dough tasted more like cookie dough before I added the condensed milk (I kind of got out of order and put it in last). It seemed to make them a little sweeter than I wanted, but they were still delicious. I’m not sure if cutting the condensed milk in half would then cause them to fall apart on me. The obvious answer might just be using unsweetened condensed milk, but wanted to see what you thought?.

    I think the sweetened condensed milk is pretty key in this recipe. If you halved it, I don’t think the dough would stay together correctly. You could try Googling for substitutions.

    Made these for my hubby for Valentine’s Day. The whole family has been enjoying them. I added a bit of salt to the recipe – to give it some depth of flavor…and to cut the sweetness (you don’t actually taste it, but adding a 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. was quite nice).

  • I made these wonderful chunks of goodness last week. They lasted all of one evening. I didn’t have any sweetened condensed milk on hand, but I DID have a can of Dulce de Leche which I had purchased to make your awesome cheesecake bites, but never got around to. Because the can of Dulce de Leche is smaller than the can of condensed milk, the filling was a bit thick. I think next time I will add a smidgen of whole milk or something similar to thin it somewhat. Anyway, they came out as a caramel-y chocolate chip cookie dough, and were delicious.   • Thank you thank you thank you! I made these truffles today for a dinner party and hubby is my official taste tester. He LOVED these and said they were the best truffle I’ve made yet! (And I’ve made quite a few!). Next time he asked me to put some peanut butter in them. A peanut butter cookie dough truffle, perhaps??     I have made these twice in one week! They are SO delicious! When I made the first batch, I only had Fat Free Sweetened Condensed Milk on hand, so I used it and they turned out great! I did add a pinch of salt to the mix, that I think was a great addition! They came out beautifully, and looked SO fancy, I gave them to my family as Valentine’s Day gifts, and they absolutly loved them! I am a cookie dough addict, so I’ll probably lay off making them for a while because I can eat the entire batch myself! But THANK YOU these are wonderful!

    I just made these today and they are delicious!! I didn’t plan ahead and read through the comments, though now I wish I had! I used semisweet chocolate chips and had a hard time with dipping (now I understand why from a reply you gave someone else). I also used a toothpick to dip the doughballs, but they kept sliding off the toothpick because the chocolate was too thick and cohesive! Next time I’ll know better :) Thanks for the wonderful recipes! As always, I wasn’t disappointed!

    These were absolutely delightful! I love trying new recipes and this one was a hit! I used dark chocolate chocolate chips and I went really cheap on the dipping and used chocolate almond bark with 2 T. shortening (if i were to make them for a special occasion or party i think i would dip them in a better quality dark chocolate- i love that stuff). but they were still great!
